Recorded in September 2019, ÆFATALISM was approached from a different path than most other VON recordings. Overdubs were not crafted around long improvisations, but rather short parts were mapped out into relatively short songs.

Some songs in the Century Conservation series were also created in a similar fashion, but where Century typically started with a single composite track of looped guitar layers and long meandering intros and outros, ÆFATALISM instead started with recording keyboard parts one at a time (aside from the songs Cervinae and the second half of Laurentide) and were kept more concise overall.

Something else that has not returned since Century Conservation is the contributions of M.P. on the drums.

Another special guest on this album is our good friend, the Barbietar (barbie guitar). The Barbietar was found many years ago in the dungeon-like basement of an abandoned home. This "toy" with buttons and little strings to activate pre recorded samples made all of the typical sounds you might imagine from a barbie guitar, except for one of its unexpected settings. After pressing a small button, the unearthed item began to growl deep and distorted synth sounds that would catch the ear of even the greatest of circuit benders. But after inspection, there was no evidence of tampering, only potential moisture damage and battery terminal corrosion. We seized the opportunity to incorporate the beautiful abomination onto this album.
